چکیده

Radar backscattering coefficients from synthetic aperture radars and scatterometers are commonly used to characterize the land surface properties monitor their temporal evolution. altimetry is mostly used, over land, provide time series of water stage lakes, rivers wetlands topography ice sheets. Very few studies radar for geophysical applications except determine changes in Arctic lakes state surface, soil moisture semi-arid environments or flood extent at high latitude. As missions acquired data four frequency bands (mostly C Ku but also S Ka), this study proposes first thorough analysis signatures surfaces using observations ERS-2, Jason-1, ENVISAT, Jason-2 SARAL The spatial variations several altimetric information (backscattering coefficient, waveform peakiness, leading edge width trailing slope) examined global scale, each band separately, as well differences. Their relationship with related characteristics (i.e., type, moisture, presence snow) evidenced. Finally, patterns computed selected regions, representative major bioclimatic areas, changes.

Altimetry backscattering signatures at Ku and S bands over land and ice sheets

Satellite radar altimetry, initially designed for studying ocean surface topography, demonstrated a strong potential for the continuous monitoring of ice sheets and land surfaces over the last 25 years. If radar altimetry is mostly used for its capacity to determine surface height, the backscattering coefficients provide information on the surface properties. Spatio-temporal variations of radar...

Rain rate and rain attenuation prediction for satellite communication in Ku and Ka bands over Nigeria

Rain rate and rain attenuation predictions are one of the vital steps to be considered when analyzing a microwave satellite communication links at the Ku and Ka bands. In this paper, tools for the prediction of rain rate and rain attenuation are presented in the form of contour maps for Nigeria using a massive rainfall data bank of 30 years which are taken from measurements made from the coast ...

Microwave radar signatures of precipitation from S band to Ka band: application to GPM mission

Radars at different frequencies have been used over five decades for observing precipitation. S and C bands have been employed for long range coverage observations. Dual-polarization X-band radars have been shown to be useful for networked applications. Space borne precipitation radars have been at Ku band, or higher frequencies such as Ka, as in the GPM mission. This paper presents a comprehen...

Simulation of Space-borne Radar Observations of Precipitation at Ku and Ka Band

Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) is poised to be the next generation precipitation observations from space after the TRMM mission. The GPM will carry a dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR), operating at Ku and Ka band frequencies. Since space-borne precipitation observations have never been done in Ka band before, extensive research work on dualfrequency radar, including electromagnet...

Effects of Vegetation on the Retrieval of Snow Parameters from Backscattering Measurements at the X- and Ku-Bands

In preparation of the satellite mission CoReH2O, one of the six missions which has been selected for scientific and technical feasibility studies within the Earth Explorer Programme of the European Space Agency, experimental and theoretical studies started in order to investigate backscatter properties and improve the methods for retrieval of snow physical properties from SAR data. The aim of t...
